THE RIVER OUSE

The River Ouse floods every year. I'm told that in 2000 the river flooded so badly the university told its campus-based students they were not to flush the toilet unless it was absolutely necessary. After living in halls for a year, and discovering what some people consider to be necessary toilet etiquette on a normal day of the week, I can tell you the prospect of this is terrifying. With students unable to shower and drains in York blocked, the University of York was about to send its students home when the river waters fortunately receded.

Despite routine floods and regular disruption to service at river side venues, this flood caused particular damage to the the bar at the bottom left of this street. The Lowther's foundation cost £10,000 to repair. Regular floods have given these pubs infamous status, ensuring they profit from locals and tourists alike.
